The use of 3D vision technology to guide Robotic actions is an increasing trend. Robotic Solution Providers are now using Hermary’s 3D Machine Vision to add several new dimensions to a robot’s capabilities. The ability to tightly integrate multiple scanners allows multiple robots to work as a team on more complex applications.

Cake Scanning

3D Machine Vision enables robots to be more adaptable to their physical environments. Robots are blind machines; 3D vision scanners are the eyes, used for identification and navigation within the working cell. 3D Vision applications generally deal with identifying the target profile and orientation, in order for a robot to execute the application.

robotic-cakeWe (concept systems) supplied a 3-D vision system retrofit for a pair of robotic cake decorating lines for a large bakery, replacing a 2-D camera system that only provided the center point of the cake (X-Y), but offered no Z-axis information whatsoever.

The new 3D system scans cakes (up to 40 cakes per minute) as they are conveyed into the robotic work cell and generates a 3-D model. “The model is used to generate a unique path for the robot to decorate the cake,” Taylor adds. “It is a recipe-driven system, so the same robot can decorate many different cake styles with minimal changeover interactions.
